Ginkgo leaves contain two main groups of compounds: flavonoids and terpenes, which are the basis for its therapeutic actions. Ginkgo’s most powerful effect is on the circulatory system. Ginkgo flavonoids directly dilate the micro-capillaries, which increases blood circulation. Ginkgo biloba reduces capillary permeability and has notable anti-edematous and anti-varicose effects, as well as eutrophic action on connective tissue, increasing the synthesis of collagen along the vessel walls. Ginkgo biloba is also an anti-inflammatory veinotonic agent.

Studies have shown that ginkgo extracts are more effective than beta-carotene and vitamin E in reducing UV- induced oxidative stress in epidermal cells. Ginkgo also increases the creation of fibroblasts, collagen, and extracellular fibronectin. Additionally, ginkgo contains glycosides or ginkgo heterosides, including quercetin, kaempferol, and isohamnetin. Quercetin is a more potent antioxidant than vitamin C and has membrane-stabilizing, antioxidant, and free-radical scavenging effects. It also enhances the utilization of oxygen and glucose.
